Scientific seminar “Influence of the sectoral structure and the resource sector on labor productivity: a view from the regions of Russia”

On April 13, the School of World Economy of the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs of the Higher School of Economics held a scientific seminar on the topic “The influence of the sectoral structure and the resource sector on labor productivity: a view from the regions of Russia”.

The seminar discussed the impact of the structure of the economy on labor productivity and economic growth in the Russian regions. The topics of the seminar included the following:

  • What is the impact of sectoral structure on economic growth and labor productivity?
  • Which regions of Russia are leaders in productivity? Due to what industries (types of economic activity) is this leadership formed?
  • Can it be argued that resource regions are more economically efficient than non-resource regions?
  • Methodological problems of assessing labor productivity in the regions of Russia.

Presentations were made by:

  • Larisa Melnikova – Ph.D. in Economics, Leading Researcher at the Institute of Economics and Organization of Industrial Production of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Topic: “Structural Analysis of Economic Dynamics: Do Growth Models Differ in European and Asian Regions of Russia?”

  • Nadezhda Mikheeva – Ph.D. in Economics, Chief Researcher at the Institute of Economic Forecasting of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Topic: “How did the change in the methodology for calculating GRP affect the inter-regional ratios of labor productivity?”

  • Alexander Zaitsev – Ph.D. in Economics, Associate Professor of the School of World Economy, Deputy Head of the Centre for Comprehensive European and International Studies (moderator) and Olga Klochko – Ph.D. in Economics, Associate Professor of the Department of World Economy, Deputy Head of the School of World Economy. Topic: “How to compare economic efficiency in resource and non-resource regions? Accounting for the sectoral structure of the economy when comparing aggregate labor productivity”

  • Ekaterina Potaptseva - Ph.D. in Economics, Associate Professor, Senior Research Fellow, Centre for Structural Policy, Institute of Economics, Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Topic: “Labor Productivity in Russia: Structural Shifts and Regional Disproportions”.

The event was held in a hybrid format – offline in the building of the HSE University at Malaya Ordynka Street, 17, as well as on the Zoom platform.
